Crestview's Tree Project

Q: How many trees have been planted in Crestview?

A: Over 300 trees have been planted in the parkways - the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street - since 1992.

Q: What kinds of trees have been planted?

A: Camphors, Magnolias, London Planes, Brisbane Boxes, Crape Myrtles, Sweetshades, Jacarandas and Flame Trees.

Q: Where did the money come from to plant all of these trees?

A: A state grant covered 50% of the costs and residents living here in the early 90's paid the other 50%.

Q: What is happening now with the trees?

A: In 2004 and 2005, all of the support poles were removed from the trees and trimming has begun. Since the trees have been growing for the past 10 years, they are all in need of trimming and maintenance.

Q: Shouldn't the city be trimming these trees?

A: Ideally, we should be on a trimming cycle with the city. However, they are short staffed and are unable to commit to when they will be out here. Also, the city does not take into account the different kinds of trees and provide proper trimming for each. They are trying to trim quickly.

Q: Who is trimming the trees in Crestview?

A: There is a small group of volunteers - residents of Crestview - who have been trained and they trim the smaller trees.

Q: Who pays for the larger trees to be trimmed?

A: Over the past few years, money was set aside from membership donations for this purpose.

Q: We have a tree in the parkway on my street that doesn't look healthy. Who can I contact to have them take a look at the tree?

Q: Is there anything I can do if my parkway has a tree?

A: The best way to take care of these trees is to make sure that waters gets all the way to the roots. This is not accomplished with water from sprinklers. Ever week or two these trees require a deep soaking - letting the water from the hose seep slowly into the ground next to the base of the tree for about two hours.
